It is our nature, at the birth of our children, to immerse ourselves into this important time of falling in love.  For generations, families welcoming the birth of a new child, were nurtured, supported and cared for during the early months.  Parents and child were given time to ‘get to know’ one another as the daily functions were taken over by others.  Family and community naturally offered help, advise, parenting wisdom and encouragement.   Even now, rituals and traditions around birth continue in many cultures.  The greatest emotional and physical demands associated with having a child occur following the birth.  This is when most of the conventional support systems in this society typically disappear.  Often the extended family is unavailable and the new parents are left to fend for themselves.

A postpartum doula is a woman experienced in mothering, who provides physical and emotional support to new parents.  A doula understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of new parents.  This includes encouraging the new parents with an objective, informed and caring perspective.

I am a mother with a mission.  It is a mission to nurture the world with love.  It is a mission to remember the maternal gift and in remembering to remind.  I begin the only place I know to begin – where ‘mother’ begins – welcoming the calling, honoring the calling, embracing the calling – encouraging mothers (and fathers) as we welcome  children into our hearts and in our lives.  It is my intention and desire to share the wonder, share the joy, share wisdom, offer help, advice and support, and share the load.  When the family dynamics and structure do no allow for support during this special time, as a doula, I desire to ‘fill in’.  I am the mother of 8, the stepmother of 2 and the grandmother of 6.   I have been pregnant for 79 months – Whew!  I have nursed babies for 183 months – BIG Whew!  I have had the privilege of being called ‘Mother’ for almost 34 years.  I come with an abundance of experience and a belief that as we support and nurture one another as mothers and parents, we have the power to change the world.
